Help us kick off the 191st consecutive navigation – and recreation – season on New York’s Canal System with Canal Clean Sweep, Saturday, April 18, 2015. Join with your neighbors to benefit the Canal and our community by giving the Canal System and our Trails a “Spring Cleaning”! We have several projects lined up from checking the condition of trails, trail clearing, picking up trash, installing and staining new benches.
Volunteers have been working over the winter to build four new benches that are ready to be installed. Through the Friends of the Park Memorial Bench program we will be installing these benches with three of them having been donated in memory of a loved one. Contributions have been received from Mellony Carner donated in memory of her husband, a former Town Historian and volunteer fireman, Horace, Jr. “Sonny” Carner.
Ed and Cynthia Laraway, made a donation in memory of Ed’s parents, Donald and Ruth Laraway. Don and Ruth were both dedicated community volunteers in the fire department and Ruth served as Town Clerk for over thirty-five years. She was active the Youth Program supporting the kids in Town.
The Longyear family dedicated a bench in memory of Agnes Lapp; Agnes was a lifetime resident of Montezuma who was wife of Supervisor Byron Lapp. She supported Byron with his work for the town, and was a very loving mother and friend to everyone who knew her in our community.
National Volunteer Week is April 12 -18, 2015, is about engaging in community activities that demonstrate by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. It’s about taking action, discovering and actively demonstrating how our collective power can make a difference. The people these benches are dedicated to, made a huge difference in our community. We must carry on their work to make this a healthy community to live, work and play.
