Online registration opens April 1st for the 2nd Annual Montezuma Aqueduct 5K Run/Walk to be held Saturday, October 11, 2014. This fun-family community event was created to further develop the Montezuma Heritage Park. Whether joining the race to run, for a leisurely nature walk or just cheering participants on, there will be something for everyone to enjoy at this year’s event.
The 5K Committee is meeting monthly to make plans for this year’s event. If you would like to join this great team of volunteers, our next meeting will be held at the Town Hall on Thursday, April 24th at 6:30 PM. We have two Port Byron Junior students in charge of this year’s Kids’ Fun Race. Kourtney Verdi and Zach Recckio are putting together a great event for the younger set. They are also helping to enlist student volunteers for race day.
Returning this year will be our very special Erie Canal mascot, Sal the Mule, our MC for the day, Bryan Rubenau and the Lock 52 Jazz Band. A delicious Chicken BBQ by VFW Post 8137 and Fireman’s Auxiliary will be selling breakfast pizza.
We have just received the good news that our event has been selected to receive $500 from the 2014 Erie Canalway Heritage Corridor Event and Festival Sponsorship Program in partnership with the NYS Canal Corporation. Montezuma is one of twenty-four communities from the state to receive this year’s funding. Locally, Savannah Bank, Port Byron office, has also joined with us as a major Canaller sponsor and DWS Mechanical Resolutions, Cayuga, is returning as one of our Sal the Mule sponsors. We look forward to partnering with these organizations and businesses to bring you a fun-filled, exciting event!
Inkind donations are also starting to come in. Supporting us again this year with inkind donations so far are: The Finger Lakes Radio Group, Auburn Party Rental, Farmboy Graphics, and Funtastic Inflatables.
